| Post subject: | standing Rigging |
Anyone replace their standing rigging with synthetic? Also thinking of replacing my trap wires with synthetic for safety reasons. synthetic can be cut with a knife in case of an accident where as cable...well... you'd drown before you got through it with a dive knife. any brand recommendations? |

Got any Wildcats nearby? They use a product similar to Amsteel (sp?). Look at their trap wires (which aren't wires). That's what I used to 'build' a bail for my spinnaker rig, also the line for the halyard pulley from near the top of the mast. Amazing stuff, breaking strain 1,200lbs, however, it does not like friction. Check with your local Hobie dealer.... |

I don't think the trap wires pose much of a safety concern. They are connected on one end with a bungee cord. You could easily cut the bungee or the webbing on your harness for that matter if you were to get tangled. There are actually safety knives designed specifically for the purpose for cutting through webbing. There are a lot of other parts of the boat that would be much more dangerous to foul your hook on. Not saying don't go wih synthetic lines, just that if safety is your only reason for going that route, its probably not worth it and you would be better off going with a hookless type harness system or getting a safety knife or both. sm |

If Class rules allowed synthetic lines I would be all over it. Trap handle replacement would be FAR easier, and make fine tuning the height of such VERY easy.. And it would be cheaper.. Not to mention a wee bit lighter... |

Got back late this afternoon from a fabulous sail, SW 7 knots, gusting 12, 27C, warm, 2/8 cloud, about 5 miles upriver to visit our 'old' sailing club. Good chat with folks on the beach, pit stop, then back to our Club in one 46 minute tack. Wow, that was fun. After de-rigging, met a new 505 Sailor, his trap lines are Spectra, light, lots of adjustment, easy to use. |

John at Colligo Marine is a manufacturer of synthetic rigging for Multihulls and high performance Monos. He is an Hobie 18 sailor and rigged his 18 last year with Spectra. More for fun than racing but we have been including him in regattas. When he starts beating us we might give him the evil eye....  He has been making me trap lines for my H20.
