It's that time of year in MN. I'll be putting my 18 in storage this weekend. My question is: Should I loosen my diamond wires during the winter storage months. I don't know if it matters but the storage area is unheated. It should experience some -30f temps before it hits soft water again. I run my wires pretty tight. I can't touch them to the mast a foot up from the connection point. Thanks, Todd |

But be sure it is dry and no water is inside that could freeze. It does seem to make sense to release the loads. As long as you asked about tension... Pre-bend is the issue here. The experts tell me that pulling a line taunt from the mast head to the gooseneck and measuring the distance from the line to the mast at the spreader point is key. They say 1 1/2" of pre-bend is standard for the Tiger. |

Interesting. Thank you for the reply. On my '89 Hobie 18 I stopped just short of prebend. Is my mast significantly different than a Tiger's? Should my mast tolerate a 1 1/2" bend? Thanks in advance, Todd h18 in MN |

You do not pre-bend the mast on a Hobie 18. I used to compete on the 18 but it's been awhile. From my memory I think you tension the diamond wires so that 10" up from the turnbuckle you can barely touch the wires to the mast. That was a pretty average setting, of course you could go with more tension or looser tension based on crew weight and conditions. There are numerous books out there which go over the rigging of the Hobie 18, I think Catamaran Sailing for the '90's is one of them. Greg Thomas |
