Definitely don't remove the existing anchor plate. You should be using the upgraded (as of circa 1980) anchor plates with the four screws that pass through the hull sidewall. I don't really see why an anchor bar or special nut would be needed to install the anchor bolt. There are a variety of stainless steel nuts available from McMaster Carr (as well as other hardware suppliers) with various widths that will fit nicely inside the channel of the anchor plate. Otherwise use a large flat screwdriver wedged between the nut and the channel to keep the nut from spinning or grab the nut with a pair of vice grips to keep it from spinning while you tighten the anchor bolt. The anchor bolt should be installed snug and rotated so that it is "aimed" at the mast step in order to help prevent bending. sm |

I definitely won't pull the reinforcement plate... no point in leaving four holes! If anything, I'd grind an oval relief profile into the middle of the bar. I'd like to find a proper nut... it is just a weird symmetry preference. I know there's a thousand other things I could do to make the boat faster or better-maintained (and I won't even talk about the bearing repack I've been putting off on the trailer for a year). This is the same psychosis that keeps my Buell on its sidestand while I meticulously clean a fairing today that is just gonna get coated in oil tomorrow (Harley motors don't keep oil inside like my Honda motors!) I used a small crescent wrench to tighten things up for now... I'll scrounge the local Ace stores' surprisingly good stainless sections and/or go McMaster if it comes to that. That said, I am a little tempted by the fella with the anchor bars on ebay for $10. http://www.ebay.com/itm/161245887986 Functionally, the bar seems a slight upgrade... and substantial overkill. I wound up going with McMaster -- the local HW guys had stainless, 5/16-18, locking, and heavy... just not all in one fastener. I can't really blame 'em for not stocking such a narrow-appeal piece of kit.
