Hobie Traveller bearing needed

Post subject:  Hobie Traveller bearing needed
does anyone have any spare traveler bearings balls (not the cylinders) they'd be willing to sell? Hobie part Mine gave out, and I don't want to do the major surgery necessary to install new cylinders during the season...

They have the balls not the cylinders? I need to replace mine also. I think the balls run smoother than the cylinders.

How? I looked at my crossbar, and it doesn't have an opening ground out on one end to slide them in like some of the older bars. The only way I can see to get the cylinders in is to pull an end cap off the crossbar.

The balls can just be rotated and slipped in without the pins, and then have the pin put in after. to keep them from rotating back out.

All crossbars should have the opening machined in the end so you can remove/install the traveler without disassembling the boat. I would use a dremel tool with cut off wheel to cut the opening in the crossbar.

If SX... it is under the starboard rear wind anchor plate. You would have to remove the plate.

Matt,

I believe you are referring to the slot to remove the rear trampoline strip from the rear crossbar? The traveller track shouldn't be blocked by the wing anchor plate.

Sorry Mat you are not correct on this one. The rear wing mount on a Magnum or SX is on the Tramp side (forward side) of the crossbar.

The traveler car removes from the opposite or aft side of the crossbar on the starboard side by the end casting. I've had a dozen 18's from 1979's to 1991, Standards, Magnums and SX. The rear crossbars have all been the same as far as inserting the traveler car.

Look closer at the Starboard side rear crossbar where it meet the casting, its possible that someone has added a slug or screws to stop the car from slipping out.

or

maybe someone has narrowed your boat to close the center tramp lacing gap. ???

99% sure I don't have that cutout (not near the boat today to compare my bar), and the boat is definitely stock width. My crossbars are replacements from 2-3 years ago, so maybe the final batch of crossbars in the warehouse doesn't have that slot cut into the extrusion?

In any event, I'll take the dremel tool to the crossbar to match your photos.

My guess would be they simply forgot to add the opening. There were quite a few issues with boats/parts as they did some of the "last runs." With the boats out of production or on limited production runs, a lot of the "tribial knowledge" in the manufacturing process gets lost and steps get missed.

Grind it out with the dremel and you'll be good to go.
