The one downside to wings no one seems to mention is the hit they can put on the body in a capsize. I like to push my boat and don't mind being upside down one bit, but I've had some pretty ice wing bruises over the years. With that said, I still love them and wouldn't want an 18 without them.

Wings are OK for lighter crews. You bring the weight out easily and sitting on wings in chop and stronger wind is kind of a magical experience; plus the perspective of standing on the wingtips in trapeze ...

Wings are crap for heavyer sailors (like me). They only work as a kind of backrest because you dont get the weight back in that fast when squatting out there. You're faster in and out with the trapeze. They also add some weight and (worse of all) they make jumping aboard quite difficult.

They suck when you start, they suck when you get back to the beach and they suck when you have to get on board after a capsize...

Wings are great. The only crew I can usually get consistently is my girlfriend. Put Magnum wings on my Hobie 20 to keep crew comfort maximized and for me cruising solo with winds under 12 or so. Makes sailing for hours in light-med wind great where skipper and crew can sit on opposite wings... talk about major real-estate on the tramp!
