When it the wind hits 20 and up depowering is good on a 17. I have no problem in light air. Squaretop was cut by Bob Curry (Master uni sailor and World Champion Hall of Famer). But you are right about flattening sail. I guess main sheet and downhaull do most of that.

Doug,
Point in case - all Tigers and Foxes initially had comptips when imported, do you see any of them running one now?

I have sailed on one of the first two tigers imported into the US - and it did not have a comp tip.

Guys:

Guess it is a dinosaur now. My boat is a 86. The 2002 Mystere 4.3 has an aluminum mast without it. Guess download will still flatten sail, as Rick White's Seminar tape shows iton a Hobie 18.

Matt,
I was wondering, since the implementation of the comptip in 1986 has hobie changed the cut of their stock sails to help provent the ammount of twist off caused my the comptip?
If they have thats awesome, if not has anyone noticed a huge diffrence by sending their sails to be recut for this?

No. We did no sail cut changes and I hear of none that have done so to their boats.

The CompTips were designed for each boat to minimize any differences in sail performance.

Hobie 14? I have never heard a complaint.

The Hobie 16 is actually better with a CompTip in heavier air. I can't confirm any disatvantage, but people claim it is less powerful in lighter airs. Makes some sense as it does twist off in heavier air, but the sail looks great... no problems.

The Hobie 17 was designed with the CompTip.

The Hobie 18? I have never heard anyone comment on a decrease in performance. The sail also looks great with them. No problem that I am aware of.

The H20 was designed with a CompTip.

I understand the hazards issues with overhead power lines and safety advantages with the CompTip and main halyard changes that come with. However, I have an older Hobie 18 that came (original equipment) with an all aluminum mast. I do not understand the Class Association’s requirement for the CompTip other than to mitigate the threat of lawsuits. Why not allow older boats compete “as builtâ€

I did just that. I found a boat that was hit by a car when it was parked on the trailer. :( I got the all alum mast for $150, now I have the best of both worlds. :D
