Was given a old H 18 and can not find info. on rigging or diagrams . #1 Mast step pin has only 1 retaining clip ? Its to be removed after stepping mast? or I am to buy 1 with 2 clips that stays in ? # 2 Main Halyard was removed from mast in storeage and I am uncertain on rigging. Have had to order Aussie ring and understand the clip in clip out ,but uncertain on running the halyard . thx
The mast step pin does not need any retaining clips. You align the mast base hinge to the mast step, insert the pin, raise the mast and pin all the shrouds and forestay, then remove the mast step pin. You can either keep the mast step pin tethered to the mast step for quick access, or keep the pin separate (I keep it in my driver's side car door). I'd recommend removing the pin before tightening down your shrouds, as I've bent the mast step pin before when I've forgotten to take it out.
The main halyard is very simple. It runs from the halyard ring up around the sheave at the top of the mast, then down through the luff track in the mast extrusion, then around the sheave at the base of the mast. It should be long enough that you can take the remaining length of halyard and tie it around the pin of the twist shackle that attaches to the head of the mainsail, when the sail is not being raised. You will also want to tie a stopper knot in the end of the halyard, so that it cannot feed back through the sheave at the base of the mast.
