I'm restoring a hobie 18 (new to me), can someone please tell me what the small diameter shock cord that runs most of the length of the boat under the gunnels is for ?

There's 2 per side, one from each bow and stern. They attach to the trapeze lines. They stretch when you are out on the trapeze

These shot cord are about 7 feet long for the trap lines. For you restoration purchase list there is another one in the boom that help the out-haul return. I would also suggest buying an additional length to use as a jib preventer.

Shot cord is also used for dagger board tension.

Post some pictures if need help.

Welcome to the fleet.
