If you are looking to race H18s in the great lakes region we have a growing number of H18 owners interested in racing to the point we are reaching critical mass to see designated H18 fleets for at least a few regattas for the 2018 CRAM season. If you would like me to put you in touch with our current H18 group please shoot me a PM.

Exciting stuff! It seems I'm talking to more and more H18 sailors in the great lakes region that seem interested in racing, if even in a casual fashion. The Hobie fleet in WNY (Fleet 119) out of Buffalo/Dunkirk, NY area has over a dozen active members with H18's (in fact, there are more H18's than H16's or any other boats). Sadly, the club doesn't hold local regattas and most of the members don't attend races and regattas anymore, but maybe in time we can change that! I've attended a few regattas in the last two years in the NY region as the sole H18 (most recently the Canandaigua Multihull Open Regatta), and I've been eyeing your regatta schedule as well. I hope to attend some of your Regattas next season, particularly the races on the east side of Michigan (a little closer for me).

Thanks for hooking me up. I hope to see some H18's on the west side of the state next year.

Fleet 119 out of Western New York hosted some huge regattas in the 1980's. 200 boat limit. We may start some inter-club racing this year.

Awesome! Now that's what I want to hear! I was already planning on joining in the spring, with the hopes of getting some interest in racing. I'd love to see a regatta again, I've been told by several members of Fleet 204 in Syracuse that they're very interested in coming back for more racing on Lake Erie!

Tired of trailering and stepping the mast every damn time I sail, lol. I'll still travel for regatta's though, I had an absolute blast racing against the Sharks in Canandaigua Lake this past October, definitely want to race some more! The nice thing about racing the Sharks was that they're very close in speed to a Hobie 18, so it was about as close to "class racing" as I really expect to get on an 18. (And yes, I know H18 nationals was in Sandy Hook this year, I was dying to go, but got pulled into a work conference that week and couldn't make it. :(

If you guys in NY want to come join us in MI probably the easiest venues on our 2018 schedule for you to make it to will be North Cape Yacht Club on Lake Erie and Port Sanilac, MI on Lake Huron. Also, if you really want to make the trip worth it we have a 3 day even in Caseville, MI in the thumb in the middle of July. Full 2018 schedule will be posted in the next few days.

Last summer I bought an H18, I have a cottage on Houghton Lake, went out only a few times before the season ended. I am really just a beginner, although 30 years ago I spent a couple summers sailing my uncle's Alcort Catfish

So would like to be aware of any sailing events in Michigan. thanks

Just figured I’d put a quick message on here, that if any H18 sailors in the Great Lakes region are interested in racing, I’m planning on attending CRAM’s North Cape regatta next weekend near Monroe, MI & Toledo, OH. http://www.cramsailing.com/regattas/schedule/35-ncyc I have been to a couple regattas over the last few years, but have yet to race another Hobie 18. Hopefully this will be the year!

I’m also planning on attending Fleet 119’s club level racing this year, which should have a handful of H18’s at least, given that they have close to 20 of them.

Last year I raced in the Canandaigua Multihull Open Regatta (CMOR) against a fleet of sharks, which turned out to be a very good competitive match to the Hobie 18! They’re a fleet of wooden cats, 20’ length with a 10’ beam. I’d definitely recommend it to any H18 sailors looking to try their hand at racing in the NY region!

The Sharks have a D-PN of 73.0 compared to H18's 71.4, so in a 45 minute race you will owe them 59 seconds.
