Post subject:  H18 mast storage

I was cleaning the garage and going to make room for the H18 and mast this winter.
Thinking of hanging it on the wall and was going to make brackets to hold it but I don't have the boat here.
Anyone know the width of the mast at the spreaders for the diamond wires ?
Need to know how far down from the ceiling it needs to be ?

Thanks

I would try to avoid storing the mast on its side if you can. My mast was stored on its side for about 15 years, supported only on its ends and it put a permanent bow in the top 1/3rd of the mast, above the diamond wires. Whenever possible, I'd try and orient the mast so that the weight of it is opposed by the major axis, to avoid bending it. You may be alright for the winter, but if you've got the room, why not rotate it so the diamond wires stick out to the sides rather than the top and bottom?

For years, we have stored the mast in the rafters of the clubhouse at my old sailing club, KSC.

As Sabres-for-the-Cup said, store it with the tree sticking out left + right, so that it is tied with the major axis vertically.
We tie lines in at least three places, sometimes four, to avoid any bends.

For the last six years, I have tied the mast in a similar fashion under the deck of NSC.
This is outdoors, so I wrap the ends in plastic when I am done.
So far, so good.

The full width of the spreaders (tip to tip) is 32”. You will need at least 18” from the top of your rack (where it touches the mast) to the ceiling for the spreaders to fit.

I would think using multiple supports (3 or 4) along the length of the mast would eliminate any potential for permenant bending to occur.

I forgot, if you have a comp tip, more care is needed, which means 4 lines, possibly 5.
Also the mast rotator needs to be pointing down......

Thanks for the replies

Storing in the rafters in not an option its finished ceiling and insulated.

Cant Tie it to the ceiling, I have I beams with hoists 16 ft apart and lights run the other direction just above that

No it's not Comp tip, I was going to put supports every 5-6 ft ? and make the rack to hold 14,16and 18 masts... see if I have an empty spot for 16 mast I'll have to buy one to fill it LOL !

I ended up with 4 supports and putting the 18 mast's on the bottom since they will be used more

Not too shabby! That amount of support seems just right, it should be perfectly happy stored that way.
