Post subject:  Ultraviolet protection for halyard

My h18 mast is stored outside in full sun during our short summer - June thru September.

I would like to protect the nice new halyard I put on last week.

The best I could figure was to put a bag over the mast tip, and then bag the coiled up halyard at the bottom of the mast.

I can store the mast with the track down to shield the halyard inside the track.

Has anyone come up with something better/ simpler ?

Thanks!

the bag may retain moisture which could cause as many problems as you are trying to avoid. my halyard has been exposed, similar to yours, for many years and has endured.

I am concerned about moisture too.

I think a bag or wrap made of a moisture shedding synthetic weave may be a good compromise.

I have found nothing in my google searches, so it may be that like you, it has not become an issue for people.

I have a spray bottle of 303 aerospace protectant - a well liked UV protectant. I sprayed down the tramp and the new hiking straps with it. I can't see a reasonable way to protect the halyard, but I think the last few inches at the halyard ring would be worth a spritz.
