Post subject:  Question re H18 Wires

Hey Folks,

Hoibe wires were a favorite topic of mine when I first was retrofitting my H16 wires...

I purchased a used H18 this winter, and have recently acquired a slighly used set of Bridles and the lower Forestay. The new Forestay does not have the fork end, but rather a spade end like you see on the bottom of a Shroud. I can remove the adjuster from the roller furler unit and connect the lower end of the Forestay Ok, but I just wanted to understand if this is Ok, and why the spade vs fork end.

I always appreciate the help.

Thanks.

The forestay has the fork end so it can be used with the adjuster to control the amount of mast rake you have. With the "spade" end you are limiting the adjustment of your mast rake and if the forestay is the same length as standard I'm guessing your mast is raked pretty far forward.

Hi Greg,

Thanks for the reply. I didn't measure it, but I'm guessing the new Forestay in roughly 6 inches longer than the old unit with Forks on both ends.

What the curren wisdon on mast rake for the 18. I remember the advice given for the H16 was "As far back as possible for better upwind performance".

Thanks again.

Well, I've figured it out.

When I replaced the lower forestay section, I didn't have a choice on which end to connect to the jib block, I used the forked end as there was a swivel connected to the lower side of the block.

I was looking at the Hobie parts page for the H18 the other day and noticed the stock setup was with a swivel above the jib block only. When the wind was flat the other day, and the cat was on the beach, I stared up at my forestay hardware...mmm...I had a swivel above and below the jib block.

I removed the lower swivel, and all is well.
