painting my 18

Greetings all, i have a 85 or 86 cat that the paint is shot. My repair guy played a trick on me and wetsand a little spot on the stern... looked great. When i paid him to do the entire boat.... no go... he tried everything and it is down to the glass. i think i need to paint it.

It looks pretty bad up close... i want it to be "purdy". I have heard many ideas... jell coat the entire boat with a roller... strip it and sand it down... leave it be...

Has anyone painted theirs? what kinda paint? what kinda prep work? what kinda applicator (spray gun, roller, fingers....)

Clean and Degrease, wet sand or just sand, and roll and tip with one or two part poly. I may be doing the same if I don't get the boat up to snuff through cleaning.

If you must paint, that's the way to do it.

Surface prep is everything.

2 part poly is nasty stuff - spraying is best left to the pros.

Thanks for the input... what does "roll and tip with one or two part poly" mean?

2-part polyurethane - like Interlux Perfection:


Roll & tip - roll on a small area and smooth it out using just the tips of a brush (a foam brush works well for this - and you just throw it away when you're done).

If you're going to go through the trouble of painting, it's not that much more to just do it right. Re-gel that sucker! It's way more forgiving than painting, and way more durable. Anyone can do it, just requires a little know how and some desire to learn a new skill.

I realized that the white gel coat on the bottom of my '82 hulls near the daggerboard has worn through. I'd like to regelcoat it and was wondering about technique? Any sources?
