| Post subject: | Hobie 18 Traveler Advice |
Hey Folks, My first cat was a H16, and I learned to sail and travel-out on the H16. I now sail a H18, and in my opinion, the H18 traveler doesn't work very well....it doesn't move very easily, especially in light wind. Is there a well-known mod that may provide smoother operation. For instance could one replace the barrel in the traveler assembly with another ball to improve the each of motion. Thanks as always... The 18 traveler is adjustable by changing the ball and cylinder setup. Stock is one of each. Two cylinders would be slower and two of the balls would make it move easier. A certain amount of friction is good when on a reach, traveled out and sheeting. Too loose and the car move in every time you sheet. |

Thanks again Matt. I'm lookin' for any movement here.... The H15 traveler worked real well...the H18 not too good unless it's really blowin'. I understand what you mean about too easy on a reach as my friends H20 Miracle's traveler moves when you sheet the main on a reach. Looks like two balls is worth a try....thanks as always. Hi, Spent a number of years on the good old 18 and changed the ball and slug every 3-4 months (I sailed atleast twice a week) and you have to clean the track before you sail every time. I tried all sorts of lubes and found food grade silicone spray to be the best (didn't leave a sticky residue). When it was really light i had to push the boom out by hand. Eventually the best fix I found was to get out of h18's and get a tiger

Hi Mike. I like the sounds of your ultimate H18 traveler solution, but I think I'd run into a problem with WAF (Wife Acceptance Factor)...the Tiger looks like an awsome boat. I've also heard good things about lubin' the track, so I'm going to try two balls and lube....yikes, startin' to sound a bit racey... Thanks again for the tip. Just be careful, the 18 traveler can fall out of the track (right side) easily with the double ball setup. You should always limit the travel short of the opening and tie off to the left side when trailering. |

Regarding the ease that a Hobie 20 traveller works as a problem when sheeting the boat. The 20 uses a 7:1 purchase on the mainsheet. If that were to be upped to say 10:1 as is allowed on the Tiger the problem would go away. I sailed a 20 and delt with it. I like the ease that the traveller moves though. It is nice to be able to easily change when you need it. On the Tiger with an 8:1 purchase I did not find as much of a problem travelling while sheeting. Even so when I changed to the 10:1 system that I am using now there is no problem at all that I can see. I also put tappered lines on it and it is great! All legal in the class and very easy on the shoulders. Putting a Tiger in my tank is a good move. Later, Dan |
