We have found that some owners of Eclipse are leaving their board in the water for storage. This is not acceptable storage for this type of product. The concern is that water will penetrate the painted surface over time and cause (osmotic) water blisters.

Osmotic blistering is one of the most common failure modes for coatings in wet service environments. Osmotic blistering is all too familiar in certain applications, such as industrial marine coatings and linings and gel coats on boats and swimming pools. This is a widely understood issue within the boating industry, but may not be something that kayak and Eclipse dealers have experienced in the past.

We are hearing customers express frustration that they cannot store their boards in the water for the season. No fiberglass product is designed to do that without a barrier coat paint application like is done for sail and power boats (bottom paint) when moored in water. Many boaters have discovered other ways to raise their boats or boards above the water surface for long term storage. There are lifts, floats and foam blocks / pads used to do this. The board just can't be in constant contact with water.

We have numerous statements within our manuals and in warranty information that express that dry storage is required and what the concerns are if the product is left for long periods in the water or simply in a wet environment (wet grass, wet storage bag).

We will produce a video to state all of this clearly, and to let customers know more details about the barrier coat option... even though we continue to state that storing in the water is not recommended.

We will add this statement to the manual as well as add a warning on the product:

Storage of your Eclipse board in water can lead to osmotic blistering, a cosmetic issue that is repairable, and is not covered by warranty.

We have received reports of the Eclipse rudder-drum thumb screw being tensioned or causing friction in the steering system. This thumb screw is designed to hold the rudder straight when using the board as a stand up paddle board. When using the Eclipse this screw should be loosened or removed. The screw will be found on the top of the rudder drum between where the steering lines attach.

We recommend removal of the thumb screw from the rudder drum. Simply back the thumb screw out and store for possible future use if the customer desires to use the board as a SUP. We have removed the screw during recent production.
