I have done two hatch installs and have had no problems with the upgrade. Make sure that the foam under the hatch is cleared so the bucket fits correctly.

I just did a square hatch on my 2019 compass duo and the lid will not close with the white bucket. There appears to be a bubble in my hull in this location(rear seating area). Got a shorter cheap plastic container from Walmart in there now to at least use the area. The temp bucket is smaller unfortunately in both width and length so does not give a tight seal fit against the lid. The foam was moved completely out of the way, in fact I had to trim the foam slightly as moving the foam blocks impeded full release of rudder line.

Just installed the rectangular hatch and bucket in my 2015 outback. It works perfectly. One note on installation. Make sure you cut the hole taking all of the marking line. If you don't, the gasket inside the locking lid will push up when the screws are tightened. If this sounds like I know from experience, your right. But other than that, very easy install and couldn't be happier. I'd call it a great upgrade.

My new 2021 uncrushed hobie (my sixth hobie) compass, the gear bucket is 3/4” too tall so the lid doesn’t shut. Why would the dealer not tell me when I purchased the gear bucket that it won’t fit my compass and why wouldn’t hobie modify the bucket prior to selling or at least put a disclaimer on it. Is my compass defective possibly crushed during delivery to the store???

The buckets will fit a variety of boats and depending on where installed they may not work due to depth. Boats also vary due to multiple molds, model ages and colors molded. It is a moving target. In any case they should to take it back if it does not fit.

As a dealership that sells a lot of Compasses and installs a lot of those hatches, we find that roughly one in ten will be a bad for that bucket right out of the packet, possibly due to slight hull deformation due to packing hulls into containers (shipped from the USA to Aus). Generally not difficult to work around it with a heat gun.

Not long ago Hobie ran out of these buckets for a good while and for that reason we asked Berleypro to design something that would offer the same functionality. As a part of that request we suggested they be made with just a little less depth to ensure they would fit them all, Compasses, Outbacks, etc. And it works a treat. Doesn't have quite the same volume obviously, but otherwise its equally good

Used heat gun on mine as suggested by oldyaker. Works very well. I heated the corners then closed the hatch and let it cool. Hatch now closes good. It does deform the hatch bucket on the ends a little but it does work fine. Bucket couldn't have been more than an eight inch off.
Thanks Oldyaker. :D

Hey all,
Had the same problem of the rectangular bucket not fitting in my compass.... but there is a fix! At least on my 2020 camo the reason the hatch hole was too shallow seemed to be that the deck around the hatch was sagging a bit (over 0.5” towards the stern). So, i figured I just needed to prop it up better than the foam blocks that weren’t doing it well.
I cut four five inch pieces of 1.25” pvc and then a 12”x4”X0.25” piece of plywood and a 12”x4”x0.5” piece of plywood.
I put the thicker piece of plywood on the floor laying across the yak inside the hatch hole towards the stern and then wedged two of the pieces of pvc pipe standing up on the board and pushing up the deck. Same thing in the front of the hatch using the thinner plywood there. Works like a charm. Deck is flatter now, the Bucket fits, life is good. If the pipes end up falling out of their wedged in location, I may need to find a way to fix them in place. But for the moment, the pressure of the deck is keeping them in pace quite tightly. Hope that helps someone else!

I asked the dealer to install this rectangular hatch and bucket before I picked up my new Compass. They told me the bucket wouldn't fit. Do I need to go back to them and ask them to try some of the above adjustments? If not, where can I buy that Berkley product in the US?

I just got a new 2021 compass about 5 days ago and did the rectangular hatch upgrade. The drop in bucket didn’t fit as it did for others. But what I did is add foam pool noodles for support around the hatch in the standing area. This made it better but was still not closing over the bucket.

I noticed that the inside grooves of the hull, between the 3 “pontoon shapes” was preventing a full close. So along smaller the sides of the bucket, at the bottom, I took a heat gun and softened it up. After softening I placed it inside and closed the hatch (it was able to close!!). There was very minimal distortion to the bucket after letting it cool. It needed to just sink in less than a centimeter on each side. The plastic they make the buckets out of are really solid and didn’t burn.

Very straightforward fix thankfully.

I know this thread is pretty dated by now, but I just wanted to post that installing the vertical rectangular hatch in a Compass rather than the horizontal one may eliminate this concern of the drop-in tray potentially not fitting properly. I just installed a vertical hatch in my 2019 Compass Duo and it worked great—a bit of a tight fit between the drive well housing and the scupper housings in the hull but with careful positioning it worked fine. Since the vertical hatch follows the deepest contour of the hull it posed no problem with the fit of the tray. More room on either side for standing too.
