2018 Hobie Compass - when leaning back in my seat, the left padeye ripped out of the hull and the hull cracked on both sides of the threads (see photo). I tried plastic welding but it doesn’t hold because there’s constant stress at that point. Any suggestions for a repair? (BTW, I’m a 160 pound guy… wouldn’t have expected this to happen).

There is a lever load on this part and the geometry was changed in 2019 to reduce it.

Contact your dealer and have them pass the information to our warranty staff. They may have a solution.

Matt,

I’ve reached out to my dealer and am looking forward to hearing back soon. Please let me know if there’s anything I can do expedite the process.

Thanks,
David

Unfortunately Hobie will not offer repair or replacement despite this being caused by a known manufacturing defect. Dealer offered to plastic weld it at normal shop rate. Disappointed. I plan to go ahead and plastic weld myself, but still have concerns since this is such a high stress area.

I would rivet an eye strap on the rail and bypass the inserted eye.

I plastic welded it back together and so far so good. Took it out on a full day float. The welder discolored the plastic, but other than that, it looks pretty good. May try the pad eye idea if it gives me further problems.
