I have a 1984 Hobie 16 with mostly stock hardware. I'd like to replace some of it with new, better stuff - Harken Carbo maybe?

Anyway, can anyone recommend specific hardware upgrades?

I have Harken, Lewmar, and Ronstan catalogs in front of me...not sure which brand to go with or what products to get.

My main sheet system could use replacing - and the jib sheet cleats are releasing on their own which isn't my favorite unpublished feature.

Thanks!

G

The mainsheet blocks Hobie now uses are the Harken 194 triple ratchet and a carbo 2 1/4" triple (Number?... don't have the info. at home). I don't like the carbo ratchet due to the jaw angle adjustment. It is much harder to deal with.

The jib cars jaws can be replaced. Get the Harken 150 (metal) or equilivant carbon jaws... that should do it.

The Harken mainsheet system is one of the best upgrades I've made on my 16 (also an "84) . Either this winter or in spring, I plan on replacing the jib system. I don't think the system on the mid '80's boats was really an improvement over earlier boats. The newer factory systems are nice, though.- Dave

So does my '84 have the old jib sheeting system or the new one? I've seen some boats that have a traveling block and cleat on either side of the mast.

My Hobie has a traveling block that leads the sheet to a swiveling eye and cleat combo that is mounted near the base of the mast.

Thanks,

G

You may not need to replace the entire jib car. If the cleat is all that is wrong then replace it. Look on page 37 of the 2003 Hobie Part Catalog. We sell a lot of lo-profile jib block too. Hobie part number 1075 and everyone loves them. If you do not have a low profile 6:1 mainsheet block you need one NOW. It will allow for more mast rake with means better pointing and oh yea LESS PITCH POLING. We have the Carbo blocks like Matt recommended and it works like a charm!
Other upgrades are:
rail rug kit ~page 17
New Hobie harness. I personally love the convertible harness. ~page 15
Hobie spray top ~page 14
Full Spray suit ~page 14
Hobie hats ~ page 10
rudder covers~page 30
Deluxe sail bag, big enough for main, jib, blocks, and hiking stick~page 30
extendable hiking stick ~page 35

These are items your Hobie dealer should have in stock ready to get to you by Christmas. Be sure to tell that special someone what you need for you boat. Give the Hobie part numbers so there is no confusion!

Thanks,

Just got a new to me 1984 16 and my dealer told me a 152 triple ratchet for the bottom, not the 194. For the top if I am better with the Carbo, do you know what the model number should be? If not the carbo should I use the 153 that Harken recommends for use with the 152?

Also I have two hangers on my boom, should I assume that I should just hook the block to the rear one?
