Rigging Video

The following video was produced in the late 80's, but has some good information that pertains to all vintages of Hobie 16s. Jib halyard systems, sheeting systems have changed a number of times over the years. This video addresses the configuration at that time.

Post subject:  Hobie 16 Trampoline Lacing
Recent Hobie 16 trampolines have an added grommet at the rear corners. The following sequence shows proper lace routing.

Rear lacings start at the outboard sides of the rear castings.

Finish off with half hitches in the center rear area. The example shown has routed the lines back (doubled over) to use up excess line.

Post subject:  Tramp lacing using mainsheet system - prebend sidebars
On a 14 or 16 you can "pre-bend" the sidebars before tensioning the center lace. We do not use double grommets down the center and get tight tramps without a huge effort.

Use the mainsheet system. Lay the blocks and line on the tramp "unsheeted" from side to side bar... in the center. Add a line to the base of the blocks that can reach around the sidebar, under the tramp and meet the top block. Tie off. Pad the side bars with some cardboard where the line goes around the sidebars. Sheet the system to bend the sidebars in by over 1". We sheet till the tramp gets a little pucker shape along the sidebar. Cleat the blocks and tighten the tramp using moderate tension. Using the vise grips, dowell or just holding the line at each grommet as you go. Tension the aft lace last and then release the block set.

We use this system and get over 1-2 inches of prebend in the bars for over 1 inch after releasing.

Worst loads on a grommet are during tensioning each one... this saves effort and grommets.

Post subject:  Hobie 16 Mast Base and Step Casting changed in 2004
In the early 80s we changed the step to allow for rake and again around 2004 we came out with another changed base and step casting set. The 2004 version allows even more rake, has larger stops and matched surfaces for less wear in contact points. The step cup also has small holes drilled in it that are called a "chip keeper". The chip presses into the recesses and grips the chip in place. They don't squeeze out when sailing or fall out during transport. Really cool idea by Dan Ketterman. Works great.
