Post subject:  Installing new mast base

I just ordered a new mast base for my 16.
How difficult is it to install?
I would assume (maybe incorrectly) I'd just need to drill out the old rivets, put in the new base and install the new rivets.
Or am I kidding myself?
Any insight would be appreciated.
Cheers,
Nick

I have replaced mine on 2 different masts. It is pretty easy but you can pretty much count on your drill bit being useless after drilling out the rivits. I would try to use the same holes to install the new one. Also make sure you replace the rivits with stainless ones.

Thanks!
I ordered the rivets with the base. Hopefully, they're stainless!

You may have to sleeve the rivets if you aren't careful drilling them out or if the assembly has developed some slop over the years. To drill the stainless rivets without wasting your bit, use an ordinary black oxide drill bit, a relatively slow drill speed (250-300 RPM or so) and as much pressure as you can muster. Lubricating the bit helps, too (cutting wax, motor oil, etc). If you try to use too high a speed, it will over heat your bit and waste it on the first one or two rivets. Make sure that you get a quality rivet gun- stainless rivets will strip out cheapo ones.
Good luck!
