What can I use in lieu of the teflon chip for the mast bearing? I need to order some, but would like to use the Hobie till they arrive. I read where either a quarter or home made remedy using a butter container can work in a jam? |

I read that a penny could be used in a pinch and tried it the last time I was out. It worked really well. The penny pretty much took the shape of the mast base and was very smooth after a day of sailing. Good luck. |

The single greatest thing to use for a mast bearing for a 16/14 is a golf ball wiffle ball cut in half. Fits like a glove, cost almost nothing, and if you keep a bunch of them AND a wedge in your sail box, you'll have somthing to do when the wind is dead. No kidding, they really work great.

There was a plastic golf ball in front of my house for the last few weeks. I went to get it and it is nowhere to be found? Just my luck! |

Do not use the golfball trick If you plan on keeping the mast up for a while. For day sailing and trailering (here you forget the thing and it gets lost on the way home ) the golfball works well for me. patrick |

I just use the cap from a 16oz soda bottle. I leave my mast up all the time and a bottle cap easily lasts me 8-10 weeks.

I would disagree with yoh about how long you can leave the golf ball in, at least in comparison to the teflon chips. There has not seemed to be any difference in wear as far as I could see on my 14s or 16. BUT, relative to the little cup thingy you drill in and place in the hole permanetly, the golf ball is a quick fix. For running to off lake regattas, the ball thing works great, especially when there are ten other boats yelling franctically 1/2 hour before the gun, 'Anyone got a mast chip??'

You guys are great! I've been sailing H-14/H-16 for 20+ years and was afraid to admit using anything but the Hobie mast chip! Now I hear everything from pennies & quarters to butter lids and plastic golf balls! Whatever it takes to sail, Hobie sailors will find the way! |
