Well, it probably wasn't too smart but when I bought my boat I trailered it 1500 miles back home! I didn't have even the slightest problem with the trailer.

Get them to put leather chafe patches at the tang, the cleats, the halyard clip and where any mast stands/supports are. The cover will last a lot longer. |

I was just wondering anyone's opinion on cold weather hauling and whether it's a bit of a risk? I've been living in Grande Prairie Alberta in northern Canada the past five years and am moving back to London Ontario for school. I'll be making the trip in late December 2013 transiting through the Northwestern and Midwestern United States, some 3800 kilometers or 2300 miles. Obviously I can't control the weather but these areas experience some pretty brittle temperatures and I'm a little concerned about the hulls on my Hobie 16 being able to withstand -40 centigrade bouncing along on a trailer. Is this something I should be concerned about or should temperature make little difference as long as I follow the long distance trailering hints mentioned by others in this topic? Thanks! |

I hauled my old H16 from Lafayette, IN to Salem, MA in February with no issues. I do not know of any particular issues with fiberglass and cold. |

I can't see why it would be a problem for the boat. Maybe take the tramp off if there is the threat of a blizzard so the boat doesn't blow around or get a pile of snow on it that crushes the hulls or trailer. Otherwise the hulls and other components are more or less impervious to temperatures. I would be more worried about the car not working properly at minus 40. sm |
