I am not sure if I have something rigged incorrectly. I have a '81 H16. I am finding that the mailsail outhaul is basically an ineffective adjustment. The way it is rigged on my boat is 1/4 or 3/8 inch rope attached to the clew of the sail and then around in the little channel on the end of the boom, through the block hangers and then into the jam cleat. The trouble I am having is that it really doesn't seem to be doing anything to actually tension the sail and frequently comes loose while underway. I have had it come loose enough that the hanging loop almost caught my head on a tack. (good thing I have a big head). I have sailed other monohull boats that have a much better adjustments with some mechanical advantage. Am I missing something obvious?

You haven't missed anything obvious - you've noticed the obvious.

The 16's and 14's outhauls don't do much other than keep the sail out on the end of the boom. Even with the class-legal 2:1 purchase, the outhaul doesn't do much.

It's not a big deal - don't worry about it. It's just the way it is.

To keep the line from coming off the end, you can either install a small eyestrap on the end of the boom, or (what I do) put a 4" piece of duct tape over the end of the boom. Use a small strip of duct tape "on the inside" of the tape to keep it from sticking to the outhaul line.

Reviving an old post. Anyone got a diagram/picture of how to rig a 2:1 outhaul on an H-16? I've got a an extra block hanging around I might out to good use.

Dito on a picture for the 2:1 outhaul.

I just broke my plastic barrel cleat on my boom, and would like to replace with the 2:1 system, i know it doesn't do much more, but I would like to put it on there.

searched the forums and could not find a picture, that's how i found this post.

Scroll down to the section on the outhaul. This was the original proposal to change the class rules and includes photos.

The outhaul setup is very simple - single line runs from the clew, around the boom, through the mainsheet bails, then terminates in a block short of the cleat. Adjustment line is terminated at the cleat, runs back to the block, then back forward to the cleat.

What's the benefit of a 2:1 outhaul if the entire foot of the sail is secured to the boom?

Skipshot: I think MBounds is basically saying there isn't any benefit.

coralreefer: If you decide to go back to the jam cleat, I've found that the old school SS ones actually work better than the newer plastic barrels. I assume ther was some problem with the old ones gashing skulls, but neither I or my crew(s) have experienced that.

Finally....general observation....I think the OP's problem was that his line was too large....needed 3/16".

If I were to rig a 2:1 outhaul I think I would try to add a pad eye at the end of the boom, and then run the outhaul from that through the clew and back around the boom cap. Do the 2:1 on top of the boom to keep the bottom clean.

We made 4:1 downhauls on Lasers this way without adding any hardware to the boat (so we stayed class legal).

and I guess everybody knows the trick of "bowstringing" the outhaul. Grab it in the middle and pull sideways, a big movement here causes a small movement in the fore-and-aft direction, meaning mechanical advantage. Then use your other hand to tension the outhaul and cleat it as you release the middle.

Sheet in. Max out!
