A perfect tack would get you around while moving forward, and that should be the goal. However, keep an eye on forward motion. If the wind pushes you backwards, you can let your jib flap, and shift the rudders to the other side to bring the bow to your new tack. This can be rather simple and highly controlled, with time to get the jib sheeted on the new tack. Most of what is said above is good advice. keep speed, point as much as possible, slow steady rudder movement, sheet in jib on other tack asap before the main. Prior to tacking (when sailing solo), I sheet in the windward jib lead (the leward jib lead still sheeted tight does not move), so when the jib comes to the other side, there is not much sheeting to do. I also unsheet my main a bit early and sheet it on the new tack late, which might cost some speed, however, too many times, the main has pushed my stern back to the original tack because I was too slow or busy with everything else. |
