that isn't a yes or no question without a bunch of other questions. Are the hulls solid? If not are you willing to fix them up? If the hulls aren't solid are they even worth your time to fix them up? You need to start there then you have a few other questions to ask. I did buy a basket case for $500 last year and brought her back to life. I did know, to an extent, what i was getting into but it also got to be a bigger project than i expected. I don't regret it for a second because i know exactly what i have. But it did take me a year and some cash to get her seaworthy. So if you have the time and a couple hundred bucks more i say do it. The hulls for sure need to be thoroughly inspected for starters. But so does the tramp, the sails, the rudders, the rigging and all of the major aluminum components. These are big ticket items that will be quite costly to replace. The pictures and description in the ad are very minimal, but they show that the boat has likely sat out in the Florida weather unprotected for much of its life. The $600 price tag may seem very enticing, but I could easily see you spending several times that amount to get the boat in good sailing condition. Many times when boats are priced this low, you're just paying to haul away someone else's junk. You know what they say about deals that seem too good to be true.... sm |

I'd so no. I payed $500 for mine in great condition with a trailer. Hulls in good shape along with the sails, tramp and everything. All it needed was a paint job on the trailer and cleaning. |

I vote no unless you get it for $200 or less. In my experience it will take you buying another 2 boats at $200ea to get a working boat. Then you will still buy all the plastic parts and lines new anyway. (i.e. rudder cams, tiller/cross bar connectors etc.). But even then.....you bought a project not a sailing vessel........ which is ok if you take pleasure in these types of things. The key thing is to get the best set of hulls possible. The rest you can find. |

If it has good hulls go for it. You will probably need to replace all rigging and rudder cams, connectors soon but you can take all of that step by step. |

Kinda rough. I'd keep looking. You can probably find a nice old 16 that someone else has already dropped a pile of money onto. You will pay more up front but get a much better deal on the end. |

So, hulls are solid. You have newer sails. The mast and boom look like replacements, as well. How new/old is the rest of the rigging? If you get a chance to take it out, that may help with your decision making. You'd be able to see first hand the boat's real condition issues. |

If the hulls are solid and keels do not need to be redone - it might be worth it. Florida is like Califonia - many old hobies to choose from on craigslist. "It is not what the boat costs, but how much it costs to get it on the water" |

Based on the sail color patterns, the mainsail is from mid '80s, the jib is from late '70s or early '80s, so at 25+ years old I would not really call those sails new, or newer. The main also looks like it's got numerous patches. In any case, if the hulls are solid, that's a good start. I'd also check to make sure there isn't excessive corrosion on the major aluminum parts. That thing likely sat next to the ocean much of its life. For $600, it might be a decent beater, but never going to be a racer and certainly in need of some fixing up. sm |
