Hi all,

Trying to fix up my H16 for the summer and ran into a snag today. Was about to replace my rudder assembly but needed to remove a busted rudder casting on the port transom first. It has no rudder attached to it. The rudder pin seems to be stuck. Tried a bunch of wd-40 and a hammer but the sucker wouldn't budge. Figured I'd enlist some expert help from the forums before I did something stupid and made the situation even worse. The boat is an '83 and has been sitting in the sun and elements for over 3 years without use, me thinks that has something to do with the seized pin.

Thanks!

If the pin is seized in the casting, then your only option may be to cut the pin above and below the gudgeon so you can get the casting off the boat.

I'd be careful heating or hammering anything while it is still on the boat. I had the same problem and eventually had to just saw it off and throw it away (the lower casting).

I would cut the pin like the other posters have suggested, then drill the pin out and reuse the casting.

Automatic Transmission Fluid and Acetone mixed 50/50...

Only beat by using a torch(mapp gas or hotter) to suck regular old candle wax into the stuck joint.

The space is very small to cut at the pin between the casting. Id like to cut it at like 4 places. What tool did you find useful??
Thanks

I have a stuck pin myself on the H14, but haven't gotten around to tackling the job due to lack of time and the boat being in storage. I was thinking a mini hacksaw and some patience should do the trick to cut the relatively soft aluminum rudder pin.

Assuming I can get the pin cut, I'm exiting that if I can't hammer the pin out (after using liquid wrench and/or torch) I suppose I will drill it out.

Good luck and let me know what works for you.
