Having a problem with my jib sail. Once I have the boat all rigged the jib sail protrudes past the mast about 3 to 4 inches. I've only been out a couple if times on fairly calm days an find myself standing up and pushing the sail past the mast to help it. A good gust will snap it by but it doesn't seem right. Have I rigged it wrong? Everything else seems good. I'm at a loss as to what the problem is. Suggestions? |

The jib on the Hobie 16 overlaps the mast. You have not rigged the boat wrong - it's just the nature of the beast. If it really bothers you, you can get the roller-furling jib for the boat, but it's an expensive solution. |

Thanks for the quick response. As long as it's supposed to be this way I can live with it. Does this not wear the sail out prematurely where it rubs the mast every time you tack or jibe? |

I use jib batten hinges. They work pretty well. |

Like you I have just lived with this issue and used my hands to pop it over. The hinges scare me with the stories about sail wear and not popping back in position after it passes. I have also read about people cutting the battens down. It was not an issue when sailing with some better wind so I will stay as is for now. |

On windy days - while tacking uncleat the the jib sheet and do not pull the other end of the jib sheet in until the jib blows around the mast. On light wind days - uncleat the jib sheet and when the jib hits the mast, push it forward (not across) to bring it around the mast. |

I bought set of lighter battens and then cut them off flush with the back of the sail, that works pretty well. You can also tapper the battens for better sail shape, if you do that and cut them off flush might work really well, here is the link to the article http://users.tpg.com.au/kkmiller/hobie/battens.html |

Your question states clearly that you have rigged your 16 perfectly !!!! It shows that you are looking at everything and asking, which is exactly the way to go. With light wind, the Jib will "grab" the mast a little bit, but little wind gives you time to just play with it and push it by hand. With good solid wind, it will not stick to the mast at all, wind bends it in a way that it will just pass and you will not even see it hitting the mast. When I sail solo I do not mount the Jib to avoid having to deal with that fact. |

One of the things that causes the jib to hang up is the jib halyard. I always tie the halyard back with a small line to the downhaul to prevent that from happening. There used to be a small clip in the Hobie catalogue that you could install on the mast so that all you had to do is clip the halyard to hold it back. I don't know if it is still available. |
