Split nylon nuts securing frame?

Yesterday I went for a sail with a friend who is new and hadn't been on a Hobie before. I wanted him to be comfortable with righting, should we capsize, so we capsized intentionally in shallow water near the beach. While the boat was capsized I got a good look at the nuts securing the bolts through the corner castings to the pylons. 3 of the four bolts were 100% nylon and 1 was metal (don't know what type) with nylon thread. EACH of the 3 nylon nuts were split.

Here's my questions:
1) What size are the metal, nylon-threaded replacements?
2) Do they have a model number I should ask for?
3) What type/amount of torque should I apply that won't damage the new ones?

Also, I need to replace the fiber portion of my mainsheet: What diameter is that line?

I replaced all of mine with SS bolts and SS nyloc nuts. I think they are 3/8" bolts, 4 or 4 1/2 inches long. I picked everything up at West Marine. Don't put any torque on them, just snug them up until they are not loose. Torque will crack the corner casting.

Don't forget the anti seize or you'll be buying new bolts too.

Interesting that you posted your question. Just did some repairs on my boat with the pylon through bolts. Check out my post under the thread titled "question about pylon bonding"further down on the forum. If you have an older boat, you may consider checking to see if the through holes on your alum pylons are wallowed out. If everything is solid, all good, but if you have slop, the corner castings will continue to wear the pylons. You will notice this when you sail; and will see evidence of it from the very fine alum filings that run down the sides of the pylons. good luck. And smart idea to practice righting your boat under controlled circumstances. Where are you on the NC coast?

The boat is still quite sturdy; can't feel any wobble at all and can't see any signs of wear on the bolts, so I think I'm good there. I think I'll replace all 4 bolts, just so I know without a doubt their condition & age.

Also going to order a few clevis pins/split rings as back-ups. I'm already running into issues and I need to get a few back-up shackles, too.

I'm out of the Jacksonville Area. So far, I've only sailed in the New River... (For those of you that read "river," and imagine something 30 yards wide, think bigger- MUCH bigger.)

It says...
"Stainless steel 1/2-13 hex nut with nylock insert will not rust or work loose if properly installed. Used on 1/2" pylon bolt on most older Hobie 16's (changed to 3/8" in 1994). Equivalent to Hobie #50-8050631"

Hi TarHeel - that's the correct item, I got some from Murrays this week in fact. Though I can find them locally we just threw them in with some other items in the order.

Sounds like a good place to sail - not too long a drive from Charlotte area.
