Reviewed the 2006 article Ultimate Sail Pattern Guide and found my sail was not on it. the 16 is approx 1980 and sail pattern numbers in the article 44 and 45 are missing, right were I would expect to find my sail. Never gave it a second thought until I read the article and found mine was not there! sail number 52427 solid Blue, white lettering, grey hull, two seagulls above the Hobie "H"

There is a second page to that very informative article that is not included in the Hobie Sailing FAQ's.

Did someone just add the seagulls to an 'Emerald Blue' set, number 38?

sending pic as email because could not figure out how to attach pic in forum

coloring is like 40 not 38. pic looks darker than it is. maybe like 92 but solid but not 38. with gray hull. Striping in pic on hull -- orange/red -- was added by us so disregard. lettering is white, unlike 40. In article site you provided, I still do not see patterns 44 or 45.

if you can add pic or explain how, thanks. Purchased in '86. understand that we were 2nd owner and were led to believe they purchased as is. what i knew about original owners, i would be surprised to hear they added the seagulls. not only that, i have bumped into folks who seemed to recognized the pattern but again, never gave it a second thought at the time.

As you can see there is a typo, # 47 IS Hot Flash & # 69 IS Heat Wave.

Instructions on posting photos are in the Forum FAQ. Basically, the photo must be hosted somewhere on the web (Photobucket, Facebook, etc.) and you link to it in your post.

Sails are exchanged between boats like clothes. The patterns listed are what was originally "sold" or listed in Hobie Cat brochures from the time period. Dealers very often swapped sails / hull colors to suit the ultimate purchaser.

The seagulls were almost certainly owner-added.

Also, Hobie Cat has always sold custom sails to those willing to pay for them. It may be that your sail may be one of them.

As the author and compiler of the sail pattern guide, I never noticed the missing numbers until now (six years afterwards). I looked at some of the original layouts and they are missing there, too. I can only assume that in the process of laying this out, I inadvertently skipped over those numbers.

I'll check the "Hot Flash" vs the "Heat Wave" names. I've got brochures from both those years.

The sail number is higher than those typically seen with Emerald Blue - but not by a lot for that time period.

It appears to be an Emerald Blue with the seagulls added.

Gray hulls would have come from an Orange Crusher or nationals boat.

#69 should be "Heat Wave", not "Hot Flash". I don't have the brochure that shows it, but "Heat Wave" is the name on the image file of #69.

One of these days, I'll get around to updating the chart - there are four new patterns to add since it was done.

The color of the sail in the photo is somewhat deceptive due to the sun/lighting. If the colors in the pattern guide are close to accurate, the emerald blue verges on purple. This sail has no purple tones to it. This sail is much closer the the blue in the lower part of the jib in the photo. If the sail pattern colors are accurate, 38 it way too dark and purplish. 40 does seen too light. On close inspection of all the colors in the pattern guide, the dark blue in 67 68 is the closest but this sail is of course not solid.
Thanks to everybody taking an interest. It sounds from all the comments -- color combo, with gulls and all -- that my Hobie is unique. That makes the Hobie even more fun. Cool. Thanks again guys.
