| Post subject: | Hobie 16 rudder rake |
so i was sailing to day and i noticed by rudder rake has to change, i have the non adjustable castings and i have seen the drilling guide before, but any one have a suggestion on were i should drill it to get a good amount of rake forward, almost neutral helm? most recent pic i have to show the mast rake.

Mount a pair of gudgeons to something. Rudder rake for a 16 should have the leading edge of the rudder 1 9/16" ahead of the plane where the gudgeons mount to. I used to have a pair of gudgeons on the edge of a workbench, with a stop block on the bench leg, and it was a lot easier setting them than on the back of the boat. |

Your drawing is correct. Leading edge of rudder ahead of mounting plane for gudgeons (same as transom of boat). You will probably have to fill the top holes and redrill with non-adjustable castings. With the top hole filled, tie the rudder into the desired rake position while in the lower casting, put the upper in place, in locked down position, tight into a good cam, and mark the desired new hole location by drilling into the rudder through the upper hole with the right sized spur point bit-only enough to mark the center of the new hole. The spur will locate the new correct location for the center of the new hole. Then take the rudder out of the lower casting, and drill the new upper hole on a drill press. That's how we used to do it before adjustable castings. This allows steering with two fingers while in double trapped conditions. |

should i use the hobie drilling guide for the bottom hole to make sure its in the right place? and then drill the top on further back right? |

If both holes are wallowed out, which they probably are, fill both. Grind a little keyway in the old hole with a Dremel so the epoxy will get maximum grip. Clamp the rudder into place in the lower casting mounted on the jig with gudgeons. Set the rake that you want, and the rudder all the way forward in the lower casting. You will still be able to see where the old hole was, so use that to sight it to level in the lower casting before marking the new hole location. Mark the hole center with the brad point bit, and drill it on a drill press. Don't use a pencil or pen to mark to try to mark the center of the hole. There are no short cuts to getting it just right. Don't drill the holes without a drill press. Shim any slop side to side while you're doing it to, and get new cams before you start. |
