Anyone having any trouble at all righting their catamaran should check out this righting bar design It shows the bar being used on a Hobie 18 but it works just as well by adjusting the upper loop positions and placing the inside end of the bar in the hull lip channel on the 16 and 17. There is a lot more discussion and more detail about the design posted on the Hobie 18 forum that you can read if you want more information

Pretty slick! I think I might try to stow my paddle in front of the crossbar! I keep mine in the lacing right now and it hurts my feet.

I suspect there is a reason he is demonstrating this device on land and not in the water. All of that hull walking back and forth is really easy on dry land. Also, with your mast in the water you will have a lot more angle to leverage unless you also have a mast float. The H16 does not have dagger boards to hold the pole in place.

seems to work great in the water too. The lever can rest against the hull lip on a 14/16

Sunvista, You bring up a good point. If you watch my video you will see that I can walk all over the place on my 18 on the water, just like I was doing on land because of the big bouyant hull ...my 16, your 16, and all 16's as you reference, are a different animal...you do have to think about what you are doing, and do it fairly quickly, when you are placing the loops on the 16. It will start to roll fore or aft if you mess around very long. The inboard end of the bar rests in the bottom of the hull lip on the 16 and 17 ( like a full 16 inches less leverage) but since the front loop is placed farther forward the front line remains the same length, and since the boat is much lighter and takes less total leverage to right, it all still works nicely. This weekend is supposed to be pretty dead here...maybe I will be able to get my buddy to video me using the bar on my 16 for you.

Fair enough. But I've never flipped my boat in flat water. I have a hard enough time righting my boat with crew in two or three foot waves around here. I never solo in rough water anyway so I guess that's moot.

Now that my daughter is off to school, I suspect that there will be more solo sailing in my future. Being the amateur that I am, and preferring to push myself to the edge of my skill level, it would be nice knowing that if I have to, I can right the boat myself.

There is a lot more discussion about designing and building your own version of this bar on the Hobie 18 forum under a similar heading, so be sure to check over there for lots more ideas from many sources.. I just wanted to add that after making several of these I have found the best material to start with is a 7 foot section of what is called inch and a quarter schedule 40, 6061 grade aluminum pipe....it is actually over and inch and a half outside diameter and can be bought from the metal superstores for $31..it can also be purchased online from onlinemetals.com for $25.45 but they then want $17 to ship it to me.( shipping would vary depending on how far you are from their nearest shipping depot). But, buying it on line and having it shipped directly to you may save you a lot of gas money??.. They will also ship 5 pieces for only $22 which would bring the cost of shipping down to a littel over $4 for each section..so if you have some buddies that would also be interested in building a bar that would definitely be the way to go.
