| Post subject: | beach cruising and tidal currents? |
I want a beach cruiser for overnight camping (on beaches, I suppose), in the Gulf Islands of BC. I am a bit concerned about tidal currents, because they are not so simple here (eg http://www.canadianyachting.ca/destinations/canada/839-bc-tidal-passes-part-1-passes-of-the-gulf-islands). How do you manage the risk of getting swept into the many rocks around here? Can you row a HC enough to avoid such a problem? mount a motor? Any literature, or info on beach cruising a hobie cat is appreciated! Also, is a HC 14 big enough for camping? |

I've paddled mine before. Works best when you're 2. One on each front corner of the tramp, each paddling on their side. One of the 2 uses the tiller to steer. Set course and sit on it to keep it there, adjust as necessary. It's hard to go against the current though and even worse if you have heavy side current. Easier with wind to move with wind, but harder to beach. My beach is rocky, I usually make a u-turn at the last minute and turn the bows to the wind to stop, jump in the water and drag the boat to shore. Depends on water depth though. |

Driggers Did you take your overnight trip? Was it successful? I'd like to do a big cruise on my 16 this summer, and wondering about others experiences. |
