I just got a newer boat that has a stepping link. My old one didnt have one and I would hold the base in place while another person steps it, which is the way i've done it in the past.

My new boat on the other hand has the stepping kit, and so i tried doing it. I put the pin through the mast base and into the other side, and just started raising the base up. When it was almost up the mast base broke off.

I have some pictures of it, and left the base in place how I had it so everyone can see how I had it setup. Did I do something wrong, or was it just time for the base to break off?

Also, I'm pretty sure this is repairable by drilling new holes in the mast and the mast base, and running rivets through it, correct?

It must be the month of new H16 owners with broken mast bases! I just asked these questions a week ago. :)

I found 2 good places to buy a new mast base.

H16 mast base 20640011 $47.30
h16 mast base rivets 8010131 X 3 $0.65

Put 2 rivets on each side and one of the front, this is how the new boats are coming from the factory. if the existing holes in the mast are damaged drill new one in another local, the mast base come un drilled, seal up the holes and go sailing!

What happens is when you lift the mast, the ball hits the front of the cup becuase the mast hinges are never perfect. At that point you are using a 24 foot lever to pry the bottom of the mast off. Have the person who is going to put the pin in for you, push back on the base of the mast so it goes into the cup instead of hitting the front edge. There may be a mark on the mast base from where it hit the fron of the cup.

You can also do kind of a clean and jerk to get the mast base to pop in without help.

cheers
Bill

You can just rivet the mast in another spot as Brad says. You can get away without a new mast base because it's under compression once the mast is up and once you know the reason it won't happen again. So the rivets only have to hold the base in while you lift the mast.
