First of all I'm new to sailing Hobies, but a buddy and I were out and capsized my Hobie 16 for the first time. When we tried righting it by attaching a line to the mast and pulling on it while it hung over the hull in the air, we couldn't get it to budge. We stood on the hull in the water abeam the mast and tried pulling just a standard rope we were using as the righting line. We uncleateds the sails and still no luck. I pathetically gave in to having a wave runner of all things right us again. Please give better techniques, righting line guidance if it matters, and/or youtube videos that are helpful. Thanks! Here's a post with lots of tips: viewtopic.php?f=18&t=1570 Sounds like you were in the water pulling the righting line, that would never work - you need to be clear off of the water as flat as possible - also have the boat pointed in the right way, and hopefully you had enough crew weight to right it - if you are too light you'll need a righting bag or something to help you out. |

Scroll down 4 posts in this thread. viewtopic.php?f=14&t=12260 I (200lbs) have righted my 16 solo no problem. Helps to have a good righting line you can hook on your harness hook so you can hang out for a while. Mast comes up very slow at first! |

Here's a video that show how to use a righting stick to get your boat back up. It's easy and cheep to make AND well worth carrying with you if you have any doubt about righting a boat. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jTRS5pTZGV4 |
