The Nationals are a great place to learn. Granted, you should spend a year
sailing local regatta's to get the idea and build some confidence.
Sailing the Nationals is like getting another year of experience in a week.
Most people that go are there for the event. That is to meet up with old friends and have some great parties and create new stories to tell.
My first was in Wildwood, N.J and people are still talking about the parties from that one.
You get to meet the fast guys that win the big races and find out they are good people more than willing to help you learn.
We are heading to Wildwood this weekend as a tune up for R.I.
It will be one of the toughest 16 fleets of the year.

Can anyone participate in the Nationals or do you have to work your way up the food chain up via local regattas?

The Nationals are open to all HCA members.
Last year you did have to qualify because it was a supplied boat event as you know.
That is not the case now.
