Not 100%...I believe people can "say" what ever they want to. But you can ask them to supply you with copys of their insurance, etc and if they do not comply you can move on to a different shipper. Dont take this is the gospel truth just the way I understand it.
If I remember right I got a bid at 700 bucks for hauling a big lawn tractor 2000 miles Iowa to Oregon.
Coast to coast...could be a different ball game also.

With it being a oversized load is what most companies are saying is what adds on a fair amount of cost. The Iowa one practically cuts that distance in half which is nice and that one will have everything I need aside from beach wheels essentially. Is that a really good deal for a boat like that or is it just me?

Where is the Iowa boat?

Storm Lake, seller isn't located there though apparently his dad is so I'd probably just ask for them to fax the title of the boat and trailer to me.

What would a 2003 boat need to race?

Maybe rudders (EPO2s weren't standard until 2004/05)
Probably sails. 10 year-old sails will work, but aren't really competitive, especially the jib.

"Boat capable" and being highly competitive are two different animals in my book.

So would this be a highly competitive boat in your book?

That's sounds like a nice boat. It's going to have everything you need to race with the exception of the jib. A furling jib has no battens so the shape isn't as good for racing as the standard fully battened jib. That would seem to be the only thing you'd need to replace with this boat...

It's nice that it has a spinnaker kit - you'll have lots of fun with that. Just not legal or racing.

Yeah definitely sounds like a great boat why does it say Volvo though? Just wondering I think it adds to it. Anyone have any idea on how much it would cost to ship it? And for the year it seems like a good deal.

That boat was a Nationals Boat or a Worlds. Someone here will have the definite answer for you........... That would be my guess.

The fact that it has Volvo on it could be as simple as the owner of the boat has a sponsorship by Volvo.

Those boats were provided by Hobie Cat for the 2009 ISAF Youth Worlds in Buzios, Brazil. (Held in October 2009, so they are 2010 model year.)

James, you are better off looking for something closer to home than chasing a boat that's 3000 miles away that will cost more to ship than it's worth.

My serious suggestion is to talk to Rob Jerry, the dealer in Syracuse, NY. There's a large Hobie 16 fleet there and quite a turnover of very competitive, race-ready Hobie 16s. Rob has his finger on the pulse of the fleet and may know someone who's thinking of buying a new boat, which would facilitate you getting a very clean used boat - that's never advertised.
