I seem to have a rudder problem on my 83 Hobie 16. Or at least I think it's a rudder problem. Whenever I get moving along pretty well and am up on one hull I hear (and feel) a "THUNK", and then the stern of the hull drops down a few inches deeper into the water and it feels like a lot of drag is created - I lose speed. I've used the rudder stiffening discs to try to eliminate some play. It didn't make a difference. I am at a total loss as to what is creating this problem. Any ideas? |

It sounds like a rudder is kicking up, but you would notice that. Do you know exactly how the rudder lock-down works, and how much tension is required to kick one up? Your '83 predates the good rudder system. |

I'd be looking at structural issues in the boat. Loud thunk? Rear drops down? That is odd. A tight rig (shrouds tight) should keep the hulls and tramp frame snug. Lateral play in a hull to pylon connections could cause a thunk as the hull shifts. Loose gudgeon screws could allow a rudder to shift and thunk. Aside from the alignment of the rudders... I would be looking for pylon issues, gudgeon issues. |
