Hi, I'm looking to purchase my first boat and found a H16 for a decent price The only problem I can tell is hull delamination along the top, it varies from usally soft to the odd crunchy parts scattered over about 1/4 of the top section of each hull. Everything else about the boat and accessories are in pretty good condition. Is it a serious problem? Repair/replace what are the costs involved? |

Hi Chris From my experience, rather look for another boat.The repair cost involved , plus the purchase price, sometimes evens out to a good second hand boat. |

If the equipment on the boat is good, it may be a good idea to find another boat with junky equipment but solid hulls. Then combine the best parts from each for an "uber-boat". |

Fixing soft spots doesnt seem that hard to do, what's the big deal? People either seem to go from one extreme to another: "a soft spot, junk the entire boat, its worthless" or "the entire upper deck is soft, just fix it, no problems" |

I guess you should ask yourself how you intend to use your Hobie... Will you just be sailing around for fun, or do you see yourself attending regattas and getting into the racing scene? (Racing is fun!!) You should also probably figure out if you want a project boat, or something more ready to set up and get out on the water. If you have no interest in racing, then maybe you an consider fixing a delaminated boat. If you think you might like to try racing, better to find a boat with good solid hulls. Have a Hobie Day! We just bought a newer boat because our boat was super soft on the top and sides. When we sailed it for the last time you could see the tips of the hulls flexing about 4-6 inches and wrinkles across the top of the hull from the flex. That was the day we said no more. Bought a new boat for $1000 but now we had our old boat with everything good except hulls. So started shopping on craigslist and found a guy that had one that was kinda scratches and dinged but the hulls where solid! Got it for 200 the hulls are really the only thing too on this boat so now the swapping begins!! For the price of this boat I wouldn't fix the soft hulls. My time is more valuable!!!! |

You might fix them for good - but more likely, you won't get it all - and they'll come back. All you are doing is buying a bit of time. |
