The Stiletto that I crew on has a Quantum square top main that has the Velcro batten system. We call it the tongue depressor. What a great idea for the jib after cobbling bits of strings and tape to make it smooth.

Are you adding it to the main?

Awesome. I will get the tool ordered up.

What about the battons? Just trim the ones I have. Then what about Batton caps? Just the rubber deal to protect the Velcro like what would normally be on the leading edge?

No caps required. Just sand the end round / smooth.

Not adding to the main. Primary advantage is hang ups on mast and halyards. A bit of a pain to use, but worth it on the jib.

Does Hobie now sell the Velcro Pocket jib here in NA?

This is not new. We have been offering the Velcro jib for years now. Just not well promoted due to the hassle factor and added cost.

We have 3 sets of the Euro Tequila sails coming for the team boats. I need to know if the jibs in these sets are the race jibs with the Velcro batten pockets.

Can I assume that the battens from standard jibs will not be interchange with battens for the race jibs? It sounds like I need to order batten sets for the race jibs. We need to keep the other battens for our standard jibs.

Matt, can you confirm?

Thanks!

Not 100% sure on the jib batten pockets in those sets. If race Velcro... trim the stock battens shorter to fit.

Hey Matt,

Is there any difference in cut due to the Whole (Euro, Aussie) mast v the Comp tip?

Some of my old full mast sails look aweful flat up top on my comp tip.

Don't think any changes were ever made that I am aware of.

The program I'm putting together needs standard sails for training and clinics. The Race sails will be regatta only. If we have to trim battens to fit the race sails we will need new battens for the standard sails.

It sounds like we will need a set of battens for the new jibs. :-)

:D

I know of at least one Midwestern Hobie Fleet which is going to look awesome next year.... As I understand it, we are going to have no less than 4 boats sporting shiny new european sails!

Fleet 297 for the win!!!

:D

I went to check online to see where my sail number might have finished, thinking it was from the 2009 euro Championships... # 113409... I thought this should have been the 2009 Championships based on the pattern.. But the sail numbers in 2009 were 111xxx???? hummm... Oh well...

Update on the Euro Sails:

The first set I opened and inspected are #112641

44 ITA
112641
Bove, Franco
Groos, Daniela
48 43 24 44 42 [51] [DNF] 34 21 35 291,00 44

Finished 44th at the 2010 Euros.

The sails look brand new and I'm surprised that they were used.

They have the race jib battens with velcro. I measured the sail and battens against a new std jib. It turns out that after trimming the battens they work without the caps on the race jib and with the caps on the std jib.

The Euro Mains have reef points! This means making up a custom halyard with two stops if you want to use the reef with a comp tip.

Another feature is large clear vinyl pockets on the foot of the sail. From the photos I've been able to find these are for Nationality Flags ... Also makes a great place for a sponsor logo if the SI's allow. :-)

If the other sets we got are as nice as this set I am a very happy camper!

Randy

I dunno if I would reef with a comptip. Chances are if there is enough pressure to cause you to reef there's going to be enough pressure to blow the head of the sail right out of the comptip track.

But yeah. Very, very happy with my sails also.

And. Gota get me a nice American flag for the pocket.
