Post subject:  What cord for batton ties.

So we are trying to redo our batton ties on our sails. We baught some 1/8 Dacron from west marine and it was to large for what we wanted and compared to what we had. Murrys only sells the same 1/8 Dacron as well. We found some 3/32 Dacron online at an antenna store. The guy at west marine said they don't get it any more and he had to go to michaels craft store to find it. Unfortunately they also do not sell it anymore as well.
So my questions are is 3/32 Dacron cord what is used?
If not what is? And were do we get it?
Thanks guys in advance!!

Yes it is 3/32 and hard to find. I think I got mine online from Salty Dog Marine for about ten cents per foot. It is braided polyester.

You need about 18" per main batten. (12 feet) Jib is a little shorter.

RH112WHT is 15 cents a foot. (The Robline works out to .18 per foot)

I have a line guide (not sure where I got it) that shows batten ties are 22". I made mine an inch longer to put a stopper knot in each so, if it comes uncleated, I don't lose a batten. Once they fly out of the pocket they sink real fast!

Main ties have always been 18" and is what is in our catalog. That is more than enough and if not... the batten is too long. This includes the modern cap and a figure 8 at the end.

Must depend of sail cut and/or batten length. On my older Hobie sail the bottom two battens protrude from the pocket by four or five inches. An 18" tie comes up way short. Just curious though...how much should a batten protrude anyway?

Just enough to get tension batten tension. No reason for longer than that and is just extra weight. Usually longer to account for sail stretch or variances in sails / battens production. You can easily cut shorter. I'd make it 2" out when tensioned.

Thanks sunvista we ended up going with this line from saltydog. I guess no one can get the 1/12 line from hobie. We contact murrys and one other local dealer and they both said the smallest they could get was the 1/8. So we ordered it from salty dog and got the 3/32.
Thanks for all the responses!!

Take my advice and cut one 18" and see if it works on the batten that sticks out the most. If I had automatically cut mine to 18" I would have had to throw most of them on the mainsail away. Jib should be no problem.

I used 275 paracord 3/32 inch from paracordgalaxy.com. Comes in any color you can imagine. 100 ft costs $6.49 plus shipping. I cut 15" lengths for the jib and 24" lengths for the main.
