Hi all i just bought a very old hobie 16. It is in original condition the hulls are very solid and still has the original tramp and sails in amazing condition considering the age, was told the last time it was in the water was the early 80's has been stored in a garage since then. the hull numbers are 292 on both pylons sail number 16209. It has blue hulls with white decks blue vinyl tramp and blue sail and jib. rather than being put off by its age I'm very excited about owning one of the earliest hobie 16's in the world, does any one have an older boat than number 292 ?. will post photos as soon as i take some. :D ( i know they are suppose to have four numbers pre 1973 but this boat clearly has only three 292 ) by my calculations that make it about 44 years old

That is pretty cool. They probably didn't even start the numbering at 001. It could have started at 100, which means your is number 192 out of the factory.

My dad and his family started sailing in 1974 and I believe their first boat had a sail number below 10,000 (it wasn't far from 10,000 though). Not sure if they bought it new but I have a feeling they were the first owner

thats awesome do you know what the serial number is? from what I understand sail numbers are not a reliable way of dating the age of a hobie.

I don't think that sail number has anything to do with it, as they sounded like they were pretty random. I think that you would have to go by the hull numbers to judge this contest. MBounds or MMiller may be able to shed some light on it.

I do it using Tapatalk on my IPHONE.

much easier, no uploading to an external site.

Well... You are uploading to an "external site", you are just doing it in one easy step... 8)
