Post subject:  Hobie 14/16 main swivelcleat install rear Xbar holes to big?

Hi Gang,

I have an issue whereby the main sheet swivel cleat ripped out of the rear crossbar.
The holes are now too big for standard size rivets that fit both the crossbar and swivel cleat.

Any ideas on best way to resolve this?

Over-plate the rear crossbar and re-drill and rivet?
Fill holes with 2-part epoxy metal and re-drill and rivet?
Employ rivnuts in crossbar and screw cleat with screws, though clearance could be an issue?

Thanks
SRG

Could just offset the mount by 1 cm and drill new holes. It won't make any noticeable difference in performance - and only 1 old hole will be visible.

Thanks for the reply Mbounds.

Do you think there would be enough strength by offsetting by only 1 cm?
Thinking of fatigue cracks forming between the holes when that close, I would think these cleats are under a fair amount of strain considering they need to hold the sails outhaul.

Cheers,

Other options-

Step up rivet size to 1/4" diameter rivets.

Use larger diameter self-tapping sheet metal screws in place of rivets.

Drill through to the bottom of the crossbar and thru-bolt with #10 machine screws (use acorn nuts on screws to protect exposed end of screws).

A rivnut would be a great option if you have access to the installation tool. I would not attempt any epoxy repair, it is not likely to hold up for any great length of time.

Can the mast sleeves be used?

Possibly, but I think you'd have to drill out and remove more than half the rivets for the traveler track, the rivets for the traveler sheet dead eye, and the traveler cleat rivets/screws in order to slide the sleeve down to the mid-point of the crossbar. Then put all those rivets back in. Probably not worth the effort.

Wrong part description.

Mast rivet sealing sleeve, that came with the Comptip kit.

Thanks Guys.

Guess you are talking of these sleeve's:

These are very expensive here in the UK without the delivery charge pushing them even higher!
Additional they are one size so could end up being a waste or worse could simply spin in the hole making them even harder to remove via a drill if necessary.

Can't find these anywhere else, guess they were made special for Hobie?

I used sealed one piece monel rivets when I replaced the mast head negating the need for sleeve.

look like these but in monel / SS:

I know a guy who did this less than two months ago. After two distance regattas totaling at least 80 miles as the crow flies (plus some daysailing I'm guessing), it seems to be working fine.

You are welcome! BTW....my daughter (and number one crew) was in London two weeks ago and had an awesome visit. I should have told her to look you up!
