Currently my hobie 16 has nothing on the rails, an I need some grip for being out on the wire. Would a spray on neoprene product work? Would it be too thin or not grippy enough? What are some other alternatives? I was also thinking maybe a plasti dip with sand underneath. What do you guys think? Thanks!

My boat has the original factory applied neoprene, but I don't think it was sprayed on, looks like it is two separate thick pieces on each rail.

For a spray on, would you be referring to something like a bed liner coating? You would need something that would bond well, the plastic coating may peel easily. You would want something that stays cool. I have seen outdoor carpet used, glued down with contact cement. I guess it's cheaper than the rail rug kit. What ever you do you don't want it to interfere with the tramp track.
Since the boats are assembled by dealers there is no such thing as factory installed rail rug. A dealer may install it as an option, I would guess.

I have the neoprene rail kit from Murray's ( https://www.murrays.com/product/30-210/ ). I've only sailed with it once but I like it so far. It's soft and grippy and goes on with contact cement.

Has anyone tried the peel-n-stick? Just wondering which one works better, the peel-n-stick or the contact cement.

What I meant by "factory" is that the neoprene on my boat is original to the boat, whoever installed it, but thanks for the clarification. :D

WRT to neoprene and rail kits, I am redoing the rail kit for my old H18. I have heard neoprene has issues re UV and rot from water damage. Anyone have opinions or knowledge on this?

Don't forget you will also be sitting on the rail, so what type of pattern do you want pressed into your buns by the rail covering?

I used adhesive backed rubber strips that were meant for bathtubs. They were non-skid, waterproof, and easy on the feet. They lasted a quite a while. They were also one of the cheapest solutions.

I bought a sheet of Hydroturf (https://www.hydroturf.com/category/hydro-turf-sheets/sheets-pwc/) and now I just need to cut the strips for the rails which I'll attach using contact cement (same as the neoprene kits).

I just bought a sheet of hydro turf also. I bought a SUP/surfboard sheet with 3M adhesive.
