I just bought a hobie 14, and judging by the sail number which is 4 digits, it must be old. There are no trap lines and I would like to install a couple. Does anyone know if the shrouds and forstay need to be upgraded, or can I just put them on?

No changes to the shrouds are needed, but the boat needs to have a dolphin striker on the front crossbar (Hobie makes a retrofit kit that is pretty easy to install). You will also need a longer hiking stick. Also definitely recommended that you go over the hulls real well to make sure they are up to the task - i.e., no soft spots.

Hobie 14's didn't have trapeze lines. The H14 Turbo did have trapeze, jib and dolphin striker.

I believe the 14 turbo had heavier shrouds also, but I'm not certain.

Great, thank you. I checked the hulls and they both seem very solid. the guy I bought it from gee me a couple of main sheet block setups and neither of them seem right. They both are set ups that are 5:1 and the boom side is 2 single blocks that need two hangers, so I'm thinking of installing another hanger.

I am trying to do this boat on a budget of almost nothing. My 18 is eating up all the cash.

The original 14 did not have trapezes, but the class rules were changed 20+ years ago to allow them.

A dolphin striker is not optional if you put a trapeze on an old 14. You will break the boat if you don't install the dolphin striker.

If the shrouds are original or old, then you should replace them. They will break with no warning.
