I purchased a Hobie Cat 16 three years ago and it's been sitting in the yard. I've only been sailing one time in my life probably before most of you were born back in 1977. If anyone is interested in letting me tag along or paying you a little bit of money to go sailing with you it would really be appreciated. I live in downtown Greenville South Carolina. |

dorienc - yes, i think that is the closest and a large club. someone should be able to help me sink my boat. lol. Is it funny to sailors to hear a noob talk about the boats? I need a 'front sail' and a trampothingie. Probably need a main sail. Never looked at it in the 3 years I've had it. Thanks guys! Chaz |

If you haven't looked at your sails or other equipment on your boat in 3 years, I would recommend that you give every part of your boat a thorough inspection before attempting to sail. |

I'm watching some youtube vids to find out what to look for, but that's not the same as having someone knowledgeable to show me, since I've not had a sailboat before. In fact, I've only been sailing once, some 40 years ago and I was just a passenger going on my maiden sail with a guy that had a hobie. Lots of fun but I didn't get bitten by the bug. Just gotta learn the lingo, like with any new endeavor. I'd recommend a Basic Sailing book, there are any number of them, just so you have an idea of what is what. Yeah, get the boat checked out by someone who knows them, and read the Assembly Manual (available on this site). Unless you know for sure they are in great shape, I'd also replace the "standing rigging". That's the wires that hold up the mast. I purchased a boat that the seller told me the standing rigging was almost new. I knew he'd exaggerated when the mast fell down ("dismasted") while we were sailing! One of the wires ("shroud") broke, and I could see corrosion on it. |

There is a pretty active group of cat sailors in Seneca, SC. http://www.keoweesailingclub.com/ You may want to reach out to them. Looks like they are only an hour away from you. Lake Murray Sailing Club may be an option to. I'd shoot them an e-mail and see what happens. |

Hi Chaz, I'm up in Charlotte and in a similar situation. Just got a Hobie 16 after wanting one forever. I have been sailing small boats my whole life so I have plenty of experience, just not with a cat. Also, I ended up getting 3 sets of sails when I bought my boat, so if you find yours inadequate, lmk. Anyway, I hope to get down to Lake Murray sometime in the coming months. It'd be cool to meet up and do some sailing/flailing. PM me and we can trade emails. Best of luck. |
