| Post subject: | HELP with trailer |
So...I need to find a trailer for my Hobie 16...and I am so lost it hurts. I have called Hobie dealers but they just want to sell me a new one and won't give me what I need to be looking for in a used one. Can someone give me the dimensions and what things I need to be looking at for a trailer for this Hobie? I need so much assistance, and I appreciate your help and patience with this newbie boater

A trailer would need 4 points of contact with the hulls. Basically under the pylon posts that hold up the trampoline frame. Measure from keel to keel for the width. Rollers or carpeted bunks at these points. The boat is 8 feet wide. The contact points are closer to 7'. The trailer needs a long tongue. Length is from just aft of the rear pylons to about 3-4 feet ahead of the bows... close to 16 feet long. |

Add a location to your profile and/or let us know where you're located... I see plenty of Hobie trailers on craigslist in Northern California, and imagine you'd find the same nearish to you, especially for a Hobie 16. With the trailer being steel and the boat being fiberglass, most trailers will outlast the boat, so supply should be greater than demand... the trick is finding a trailer separate of a boat (though you may find a rough-condition H16 atop a workable trailer for a net reasonable cost) -- old hobies haven't always been well-kept through their decades of life, and the trailers bear up under that condition than do their loads. In my experience, buying a parts vehicle is the cheapest way to acquire a healthy collection of parts, as well! Randii |

Don't forget, if you buy an old trailer, check the tire manufacture dates and replace according to your risk tolerance. |
