Post subject:  Hull problem

Hi everyone,

I have an older hobie that i have been fixing after my young son and co. put small holes in the hulls. Noticed this morning a what could be another problem. I have the hulls upside down and noticed a bulge that has some cracking and a visible fibreglass pattern around the area.

Any ideas on the problem and a solution?

I can not replace the hull due to a previous owner epoxying the crossbar of the tramp to the hull.

Looks like a pylon shoe issue. There was a very detailed article in the Hobie Hotline magazine a few years ago explaining how to repair this. You should be able to download the issue from the archives. It is somewhat involved, but should be manageable if you have experience working with fiberglass.

You can find the article in the Sept / Oct 2009 issue of the Hotline.

Thanks srm for the reply.

There is also some cracking around the top of the pylon i have noticed too now. So what you are saying is the 'shoe' has come lose in the hull? Suppose that makes perfect sense seeing what is visible.

Can you point out to me where to find the hobie articles?

Cool, thanks SM for the help, appreciated.

The article looks pretty cromprehensive and doable.

Looks like I might have to install a couple of inspection ports to check the pylon shoes.

Will check back in once I cut a hole and have some extra photos of what has happened from inside.

Ok, so been a while, finally got around to cutting a hole in my hull.

Looks like the glue has given way and its going to be a repair job to the pylon
