Not much will survive being trailered. Even wool will eventually unravel - and wool is not nearly as sensitive as recording tape.
This is my preferred tape:
And it even comes in its own dispenser.

Hi all, I know many of us tie things on our bridals to help us find the apparent wind. I like to use old cassette tapes or VHF tape and tie it here. Only thing is when I tow the boat at 60mph, that casette tape is so fragile it tears off and I have to replace it each time I go sailing. What light, long streaky, materials do you use which you think can be better? |

Try knitting wool. I used it for years. It won't tear off even when trailering at 60 mph. The cassette tape doesn't last. |

I use a Davis Tel-o-cat and of course, I remove it when trailering. The yarn thing sounds good though or I guess you could just keep replacing the cassette tape, I mean, it is kinda cheap and abundant. |

I've always been partial to shroud tels. I only use them when off the wind, though. I watch the jib tels when going to weather. I have used slivers of ripstop nylon and yarn. Both seem to work fine and trailer well. Here's a tip for keeping them from wrapping on the support wire...use some lockwire to wrap a spiral around the support wire and extend a piece of the lockwire out from the support wire to the length of the tel...make a loop and tie the tell to the loop...never wrap again. |

I use eight track tape because of an event years ago. I had an eight track player in my car. i came out one morning to go to work and discovered that someone had broken into my car and left me ten more tapes. |

I used to manage mutli-family residential properties (fancy name for "apartments"). All the aging hippies would move out and leave boxes of 8-tracks behind. My mom had a player in her '72 Olds Delta 88 - the car I learned to drive on. I have a lifetime supply. |

Hahaha, that's funny. I actually have a Panasonic 8-track player that looks like a dynamite plunger, I got it for Christmas when I was a kid in the 70's. I haven't played it in a long time but last checked about a year or so ago and it still works. I have a box of 8-tracks just for that old player. |
