Hi everyone. I picked up an ‘84 last fall an have been gradually getting it ready for spring. I’ve a couple of questions regarding the boom. I assume it’s priginal. Has the old Seaway double tangs.
About 2.5 feet back of the gooseneck is another tang (smaller than the aft tangs). What’s it for? About 6 ft back there are two plastic cleats on each side. What are they for?
Thanks,
Ralph

I believe what you describe is for a boom vang, a line that would go from that attachment down to the base of the mast. I know some of the H-16 booms had that but don't think they ever used the vang. The purpose of the vang is to keep the boom from rising when on a reach or a run. I used to sail a Cape Cod catboat (monohull) with a very large sail. On a downwind run there was a danger of the boom going almost vertical, then crossing over and refilling with air with a lot of force. It is called a gull wing jibe. The trouble was you couldn't put a boom vang on that boat because the boom was too low at the mast.

I knew that attachment point was for a vang, but always assumed that it was not needed because its a catamaran and the rear traveler, even when let out for down wind, can go significantly further port or starboard than a mono-hull of comparable sail size.

I have a 1984 model also, but it doesn't have anything like that on the boom. The boom is original to the boat and has the old Seaway 5:1 set up, but nothing close to the mast. Wonder if there was a change sometime in '84, or maybe you have an older model?
Here is a pic to show what I am talking about. Image

Mine has alum mast and tramp frame. But boom is black. Came with sails, org and yel, that are 84 (state registration says 1984). But sail number is 17, so I assume they were a race issued set. I’m gonna try to get photos posted.

It is a boom vang tang. They were never really used for the reasons discussed above with the major drawback being that if you forget to release it during a jibe, bad things happen. The other drawback is that the tang is a metal piece that hangs down from the boom, ready to scrape the crew’s head if they don’t duck low enough. Drill out the rivets and take it off - your crew will thank you.

Not sure what the other cleat is for. Definitely not stock. Maybe used as part of a reefing system for the mainsail.

Here is a pic from my Hobie 16 Assembly Manual. For what it's worth, I am also including a pic from Royce's Sailing Illustrated that shows the boom vang thing. As recommended, I would just remove the thing. ImageImage

I’ll yank it. It’s pretty useless and a great way for the crew to need a couple stitches on the back of the head.

I wonder if the cleats on the side of your boom could be for the outhaul adjustment? I've only seen the outhaul cleat mounted to the underside of the boom but I don't see one on yours.

The stainless outhaul cleat is there. The plastic cleats lock onto line pulled to the aft end - just the opposite of the outhaul.

With the 84 on up the vang bracket was left off and the outhaul cleat is no longer stainless, but plastic instead.
