Hi,
I'm planning to repair my late father's Hobie 16 and get it back on the water. The boat and mast sat ideal in direct sunlight and unprotected in my father's backyard for the last ~8years.
There are exposed fibers running the full length of the mast's comp tip. I assume the sun / UV degraded the resin and exposed the fibers.

What's the best method to repair it?
Sand the surface to remove the exposed fibers and apply an epoxy or polyurethane paint to protect the surface?

That’s pretty much all you can do. You may still have to touch up the paint every few years, but it will prevent you from getting fiverglass splinters in your hands everytime you touch the mast.
